Growing up, my parents were always telling my brother "stop slouching!" Although, he viewed this comment as nagging, research proves that this is in fact excellent advice. There is a direct correlation between proper posture and efficient body function during daily activities. Poor posture causes postural stress on the spine, which can lead to headaches, back, neck and shoulder pain. Our environment promotes poor posture because everything we do is in front of us, our body must fight gravity to not hunch over but to sit and stand up right. By becoming aware of the positions that can cause postural stress we can strive to decrease the various triggers of back pain. Take a moment to assess your posture while you are reading this.

It is becoming more and more common for kids today to specialize in a single sport.  This means that kids are playing one sport year-round, often for several hours per week.  They are undergoing significant and repeated stresses on their growing bodies.  This increase in sport specialization may be one reason we are seeing a rise in youth sport injuries in our clinic.

Staying Active As We Age: It Doesn't Have To Be Painful

I recently had the opportunity to speak to a few different groups on the importance of using exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle through the ages. It is interesting to me how this can be such a difficult thing for us as a human race to begin, let alone continue as we age.

Remember, there are many things in our world that are meant to be beneficial for improving health, many of which have a certain amount of risk to individuals. Take medication or surgery for example. These all have their inherent risks, just read the bottle of medication you are taking. Exercise in general if done correctly and started in a safe manner has no negative benefits. It is something that all of us should be doing to work towards a healthier lifestyle.
