Prior to becoming the Head Strength Coach at Forest Hills Central 2 years ago, I spent 5 years as the Head Athletic Trainer to these high school athletes. This relationship helped build a solid rapport filled with respect and trust from the kids, coaches, parents, administration, and community. Any one of my athletes would agree that I run a pretty tight ship. I do not tolerate disrespect, inappropriateness, laziness, or tardiness. My athletes know there will be a consequence for their actions if reprimanded. This is re-enforced and supported by their head coaches.

Being a collegiate softball player and multi-sport athlete my whole life has help shape my training philosophy. I’ve always had a niche for coaching; I’m what most consider “OCD”, as well as loud, passionate, flexible, and patient. Having 15 years experience as a softball coach and windmill pitching instructor built the frame-work of my coaching style. Prior to becoming certified by the NSCA in strength and conditioning, I had 6 years experience running summer programs for youth athletes. Once attaining my degree in Athletic Training in 2010, I became more attuned to injury prevention training. In 2011, I became certified through Cincinnati Sports Medicine as a certified Sportsmetrics instructor: an ACL knee injury prevention program that focuses on the correct mechanical and functional awareness of plyometric training for female athletes to decrease their risk of knee injury.
Our Ranger Strong program was designed and developed in conjunction with The Center For Physical Rehabilitation and our athletic training and strength and conditioning services. This provides FHC student athletes with year-long in-season and off-season training. The goal is to develop and maintain physical fitness while enhancing performance on the playing field. It promotes multi-sport participation for all of our student athletes, while providing much needed injury prevention training. Our program also incorporates each and every one of our athletic programs and student athlete populations to build a new “culture” through the development of teamwork, character, sportsmanship, mental toughness and school spirit.
With all that said, being a female in a male-dominated industry definitely has its challenges. If I had a dollar for every stereotypical comment made by misinformed individuals about what they “think” I do or how I’m perceived as a strength coach, I’d be rich. I cannot speak for every woman in my profession, but for those that have mistakenly made direct or indirect comments about what they think women do in this setting, I would direct them to both my educational background, and the training and experience I have working with this athletic population and our community.
Having the support and trust from my coaches and athletic administration has been pivotal to making this program the success that it is. Because of this, we have seen increased buy-in from most of our athletic population; it has shown in the decreased injury rates, decreased time to return to sport post-injury, and the rise in titles/championships.
The most rewarding aspect of my job is not only seeing an athlete hit their goals in the weight room or on the playing field, but to watch an athlete mature in their self confidence, mental toughness, character, and work ethic. The work we do in the weight room only helps in developing these and other important qualities, both as athletes, and as human beings.
